pragor Pragor, Productores Agrícolas de Orgánicos Regionales (Regional Organic Agricultural Producers), is a cooperative of fairtrade and organic avocado, mango and grapefruit farmers in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. The association includes over 100 small holding producers that own an average of 6 hectares. In close cooperation with Fairtrsa PRAGOR was the first avocado association that was certified under the fairtrade standards.Their fruit is sold in the United States, Canada and Europe.
Organic Benefits: Half of Pragor members inherited their orchards from their families. 95% of producers are planning on passing on their orchards to future generations. Since organic cultivation promotes soil health, they are confident that they will leave a valuable piece of land for their children.
Fairtrade Benefits: Pragor members recognize price stability as the biggest fairtrade advantage. Regardless of the market price, they know that their production costs will be covered. The fairtrade social premium rallies the producers around solving issues facing their association and overall community. In the past social premiums were invested in building a school for handicapped children, fixing impassable roads, outfitting public clinics with medicine and supplies and solving community water problems.
Future Plans: Pragor's main goal is to increase the number of members year after year. Thanks to their fairtrade benefits and the Fairtrasa empowerment program, PRAGOR is certain that many more small farmers will join their organization. The group will invest future social premiums strategically ensure necessary professional development.
